Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance can I prepare this Easy Christmas Trifle?
Since this trifle relies on setting jelly and fresh ingredients, you can prepare the jelly and custard layers the day before assembling. For the best texture, assemble the entire trifle, including the whipped cream, no more than 4-6 hours before serving to keep the Madeira cake fresh.
What can I substitute for the Hartley's Strawberry Jelly ready mades in this trifle?
If you can't find the ready-made jelly, you can use a standard packet of strawberry jelly, prepared according to package directions but using slightly less water to ensure a firmer set. Alternatively, for a fresher take, use a layer of fresh strawberry compote thickened slightly with cornstarch.
How should I store leftovers of this Christmas Trifle?
Cover the trifle bowl tightly with plastic wrap or use a specific trifle dome lid to prevent drying out and absorbing refrigerator odors. Store the trifle in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, though the cake layers may become quite soft the longer it sits.
